Celebrate the Season With These Accessible Adventures
People in wheelchairs need to unwind, especially during the holidays. Arizona is rich in fun and relaxing activities, and there’s also plenty that wheelchair users can do during the fall season. Check out these amazing destinations and activities in Arizona.
Turn back to Nature at the Desert Botanical Garden
Explore over 50,000 plants and desert life, spread out on 55 acres of grounds in a variety of environments. Visit their butterfly garden and check out their seasonal monarch butterfly display open until November 22nd. Wheelchairs and Electric Convenience Vehicles (ECVs) can be rented at their visitor’s center if needed. Because of the current situation, advance booking is required.
Learn a Thing or Two at the Arizona Science Center
The Arizona Science Center has over 300 hands-on exhibits spread all over their establishment. Although their world-famous planetarium is temporarily closed, their onsite theater offers fascinating documentaries that children and grownups alike will definitely enjoy. Wheelchairs can be borrowed (valid ID required) and accessible restrooms are available.
Watch a Drive-In Movie at Mesa
Drive-in theaters provide a safe movie experience for movie-goers who want to watch a film the old-fashioned way. Simply drive in at Digital Drive-in AZ in Mesa to watch classic and current movies. Check out the show schedules here to learn of what’s coming up.
Check out the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson
With paved walkways connecting its indoor exhibits, Tucson’s Pima Air & Space Museum remains accessible for people utilizing wheelchairs and mobility aids. The museum encompasses six indoor exhibit hangars, three of which dedicated to WWII, and features over 350 historic aircrafts.
Accessible Arizona Holiday Events
Here’s more wonderful seasonal activities you can do with your family:
- ZooLights at the Phoenix Zoo (select nights, opening Nov. 7th)
- Nightly Snowfall at Tempe Marketplace (7 and 8 p.m. nightly, opening Nov. 27)
- World of Illumination, Glendale (opens Nov. 20)
- Christmas at Schnepf Farms, Queen Creek (runs Nov. 26-Jan. 4)
- Winterhaven Festival of Lights Tucson, AZ (December TBD)
Make sure that wheelchair users are properly wrapped up. Even though Arizona is known for its scorching hot summers, the colder seasons can be surprisingly cold (but at least we’re not knee deep in snow). You also have to consider reliable transportation when heading to the destination mentioned above. Getting around Arizona with accessible transportation options can make all the difference for wheelchair users to enjoy the holidays.
